How net WPM and accuracy are calculated
There is no single “net WPM” — Indian government exams use at least three different formulas, and the same performance can pass one and fail another. Here is each one, in plain terms.
Gross WPM (the starting number)
Every method starts from gross WPM — correct characters typed, divided by 5 (the standard “keystrokes per word” convention), divided by minutes:
Gross WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
Net WPM — three formulas exams actually use
Standard net WPM
Common default; used for TypingSarthi.com level progression
Gross WPM − (errors ÷ minutes)
Character method
Commonly described for SSC and CPCT
(total keystrokes − errors) ÷ 5 ÷ minutes
Word method with penalty
Commonly described for RSMSSB / Rajasthan exams
Gross WPM − (full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2)
Accuracy %
Correct characters divided by total characters attempted (correct + incorrect):
Accuracy % = correct characters ÷ (correct + errors) × 100
Key Depressions Per Hour (KDPH)
SSC CGL DEST and a few other exams state their requirement in key depressions per hour instead of WPM (commonly 8,000 or 10,500 KDPH depending on the post):
KDPH = total keystrokes ÷ minutes × 60
A note on accuracy of these formulas
These are our best reading of published descriptions of each method, not the official rule for any specific exam. Formulas and cut-offs change between notification cycles and some boards publish neither clearly — always confirm against the current official notification for the exam you are sitting.
